I am brand new to the sport of kayak fishing and was wondering what is the best kayak to buy under $500. I am planning to start fishing down in Port Sulphur and Buras area.

a used one. I hear good things about the Speck at Academy, but have no first hand experience with it.

Check with KFS and see if they have any blems in stock or, I agree with Ragin Cajun, buy something used. You'll end up with a much better yak than something new for under $500.

Welcome to the site.

We can put in a Tarpon 120 blem for $575, shipping will cost your $49 - no tax. It is a brand new kayak. Call the shop

I know my Dad (stostu) was looking to sell our Tarpon 100... let me know if you're interested and I'll see if he still wants to sell it.

I have some questions about blems.

Are the defects cosmetic only? If not, what are the frequencies of structural defects and how serious are they? Are they still fully covered by the factory warranty despite their manufacturing shortcommings?

LSU Beast - Welcome !!!

Anyone who is a LSU fan - AND - wants to fish in the Buras area is A OK !!!

Getting a yak for under 500 bucks will be tough. I would definatley make 12 feet your minimum ( giving that you are an average height and weight ).

If you can pick up a Tarpon 120 for just over 500 bucks then you should JUMP on that right away. Great fishing yak and that's a great price.

Other than that deal ... it would be "The OK Speck" ( nice, but not in the same class as the Tarpon 120 ) ... or you may be looking all summer for a used boat ( and still may have trouble finding one under 500 bucks ).

My opinion ... get the Tarpon 120 from KFS.

Let me know when your ready to go to Buras ... It's a great place to yak fish.

If you can't find used, a Blem is the way to go.

I don't know how big you are, but I fish out of a Malibu Kayak Extreme (barge)...I have also fished out of my mom's Tarpon 120...I am 6'4, 280 lbs, and also carry a crate, paddle, seat, 3 rods, tackle box, PFD.

Other good ones to look at, the Prowler P13, Hobie Quest, anything from Fishndive, etc...just keep an eye on the classifieds.

NST, I bought a blem from KFS and cannot tell you where or what the blem was. KFS guarantees that teh belm will not effect performance or structure. Yes, it does have the full factory warranty. KFS explained that sometimes a color variation will make it a blem.
