Nissequogue River State Park
is the newest New York State Park. The park opened on April
28, 2000. It's be one of the first parks to offer a kayak
and canoe launching area. To get to the kayak launch area
you have to drive to the end of the park road. When you get
to the launch area, you have to unload your gear and move
your car to the parking lot. The river is at the bottom of
a hill, so you have to descend down a flight of stairs to
reach it. To get your kayak to the river the park built a
small slide that runs along the stairs. The river is a tidal
river, so you should be aware of when high tide is. The park
also puts up a daily report of all the information you need
to know. As you paddle down the river and go through the marina,
there are two ways to go. One way is to head to your left
and into the Long Island Sound. The other way is to head down
the Nissequogue River on your right. The trip towards the
Sound is short, but you can see the bluffs that loom over
the inlet. If you head towards the sound, you really don't
have to worry about the tides, but if you head down river
you can run out of water as the tide recedes. As you get out
the inlet there are tidal flats on both sides and they hold
fish. You will be able to get up close and personal to these
areas as no boat can. I am really not that familiar with the
fishing in the area but some of the stories are legendary
from there.
