| The eastern part of the Bay also has great
access and fishing. You'll encounter deeper waters than the
western bay the farther east you go. Its still a very shallow
body of water though. There are a lot of places to launch.
To many to list. This is a great area to do shuttle trips.
You can drop off vehicles at a spots and then work down the
looking for fish. There is a lot of access in the area from
Keansburg to a Belford.
Keansburg Beaches: Take Palmer
Ave. off of Rt. 36. There are several spots all along the
bay in the town of Keansburg from which you can launch. Wheels
are a big help for most of these spots.
Port Monmouth: East of Keansburg
you come to this great area. There's parking on either side
of the creek and a long jetty protecting the inlet. On the
east side is Monmouth Cove Marina and the parking lot is behind
it. Use Port Monmouth Rd. West to get to this parking lot.
The lot on the west side inlet is easy to see from the main
road. This area produces a lot of peanut bunker and in the
fall is very thick with them. Head in either from the launch
sites. Bring wheels.
Belford: There's a pier at
a spot called the Spy House and a public bathroom. The launching
is OK. Better to head to the next parking lot east. A short
haul over the dunes puts you at the water. Belford proper
has recently had a ferry terminal put in. If you can find
parking at the ferry parking lot its not far to the water.
There is a jetty here and an inlet. Lots of rocks too. To
the east is another inlet. Don't go beyond this point. The
large pier you now see to your east is a Navy pier and they
don't have a sense of humor (since 9111) should you enter
the restricted area. Its not worth the trouble you'll have
to simply catch some fish.
Leonardo: This is the next
spot on the eastern side of the Navy pier. There's a boat
launch ramp and parking here. Either use the boat launch or
the beach just to the west. On this side of the pier besides
the regulars of the bay you'll also see albies at times.
Atlantic Highlands: Right in
town is the ferry parking and the beach alongside the jetty
is good for launching. There's a lot of good fishing here
but be careful. Lots of big boats and the ferries. The rocky
breakwater to the harbor is a natural and you're now just
across Sandy Hook.
Sandy Hook: There is only one
official launch spot on fish collecting peninsula. Its called
the windsurfing Its parking lot C. You launch on the bay side
is across the road the lot. Wheels or a buddy are helpful.
To the north are pilings, a small bay, 2 inlets, sandbars,
etc. Up further is Horseshoe Cove which has a marvelous sandbar. |
